There has been a major expansion in Bangladesh’s Primary Textile Sector (PTS), with an investment of almost Taka 10000 crore in last four years, attracting a total investment to over Taka 18000 crore. Almost 77 new spinning mills, 2,588,626 new spindles and 45,865 new rotors have been added during 2002 to 2005. Currently a total of around 4,837,925 spindles and 102,169 open-and-rotors have been set up in the country under PTS. Mr. M. A. Awal, Chairman, Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA), informed that the deferment of yarn import through the Benapole land port in India on March 9, 2002 saw a paradigm investment shift from other sectors to PTS sector. This had

resulted in creation of almost eight lakh in the country.

During 2004-05, the total yarn output including auto-cone and non auto-cone stood at 939.79 million kilograms, which could fulfill 100 percent domestic demand for textile, terry towel and sweater, fabrics for knit RMG and 50 percent fabrics for woven RMG. Mr. Awal believes that the PTS was nearing its peak and now the focus would be on developing technology and resources. Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Bangladesh Knitwear Manufactures & Exporters Association (BKMEA) and Bangladesh Terry Towel & Linen Manufactures and Exporters Association (BTTLMEA) were also requested to take an active part in growth of the sector, Awal informed.
