Reliance Industries (RIL), the world's largest producer of polyester fiber and yarn, has reported a net profit of almost Rs. 66 billion (US$1.46 billion) for the nine months ended on December 31, 2005. This is an increase of 24 percent compared to the corresponding period last year despite a planned refinery shutdown during third quarter, which dampen the result by 15 percent.

| petrochemicals operations, which includes the fibers and yarn business, and accounts for around two-fifths of the total, increased by 16% over the comparable nine month period of 2004.
RIL has an installed capacity of 1.1 million tons per year of polyester fiber and yarn. Production of PFY, PSF and PET Chips in the first three quarters of the current year has increased by 8% to 833,000 tons. During the third quarter, the company has commissioned a new polyester plant at Patalganga with PFY capacity of 100,000 tpa.
