It has probably never occurred to you, but season after season there is a conspiracy to make you wear what you do. Incidentally, it is decided two years in advance that this winter most of us are going to be seen in velvet, shrugs, animal prints and balloon skirts and boots. Or that next year will be dominated by the Russian influence, the yin-yang (black-and-white theme) and corsage (big flowers). Lace, eyelid and crochet will be prominent, while the silhouette will be straight and clean with no embellishments. "This conspiracy is called fashion forecasting," quips Harmeet Bajaj, a former professor of National Institute of fashion Technology (NIFT). Most designers,

exporters, stores, fashion experts, critics and magazines in Europe are hand-in-glove in this collusion. "This is the reason that one can identify a distinct trend in European fashion. Paris, Milan and London follow a pre-decided theme, unlike Indian designers who do their own thing," Bajaj says. Bajaj elucidates on how this process works, citing Chanel's'Crochet Collection' that was showcased in October 2004 (and probably conceived in July 2004). Trade magazines were invited to review the collection. Orders were placed by leading stores and the collection was made available in limited numbers in March 2005. "Society icons" were seen donning it and consumer magazines photographed them wearing it, and splashed it on their cover pages.
