The recent trend of retrenchments and closures of established factories such as the Rex Trueform facility in Salt River, have been blamed on the deluge of cheap Chinese products as well as the strength of the rand. However, he added, promised government export incentives would help to offset higher local input costs.

Buckingham also said he was optimistic that the customized sector programme in the process of being finalised with the trade and industry department would benefit companies such as Monatic and Trueform by increasing production of value-added products. In the meantime, House of Monatic announced yesterday that it had rehired 175 of the 970 workers who were retrenched by Rex Trueform last year after reopening the factory in terms of a five-year lease agreement on the plant and premises. Monatic chairman Fred Robertson said the goal was to have 250 floor staff by the end of the first quarter.
