The Quick Estimates of index of industrial production (IIP) with base 1993-94 for the month of March 2005 was released on may 12 2005 by the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. The General index stands at 225.8, which is higher by 7.2% as compared to the level in the month of March 2004.
As many as 14 of the 17 two-digit industry groups have shown positive growth during the month of March 2005 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. 'Textile Products (including Wearing Apparel)’ have shown the highest growth of 29.4%, followed by 22.0% in ‘Leather and Leather & Fur Products’ and 18.1% in 'Beverages, Tobacco and Related products'. On the other hand, 'Wood and Wood Products; Furniture and Fixtures’ have shown a negative growth of 11.6% followed by a decline of 4.9% in 'Food Products' and 0.9% in ‘Metal Products and Parts, except Machinery and Equipment’.
The Indices of industrial production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of March 2005 stand at 176.4, 236.2, and 195.9 respectively, with the corresponding growths of


5.6%, 7.8% and 3.0% as compared to March 2004. The cumulative growth during April-March, 2004-05 over the corresponding period of 2003-04 in the three sectors have been 4.3%, 8.8% and 5.2% respectively, with the overall growth in the General index being 8.0%.
Alongwith the Quick Estimates of IIP for March 2005, the indices for February 2005 have undergone the first revision and those for December 2004, the second (final) revision in the light of the updated data received from the source agencies. There are no significant revisions in the indices for December 2004 and February 2005.
As per use-based classification, the growth in March 2005 over March 2004 is 6.9% in Basic goods, 14.2% in Capital goods and 4.1% in Intermediate goods. The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have recorded growth of 8.2% and 7.2% respectively, with the overall growth in Consumer goods being 7.5%.
Quick Estimates of the index of industrial production at Sectoral, 2-digit level of National Industrial Classification (NIC)-1987 and by Use-based classification for the month of March 2005, along with the growth rates over the corresponding month of previous year, including the cumulative indices and growth rates.
