Orissa state government has initiated the procedure to patent ‘Kotpad’, the exclusive and original textile designs from Orissa, India, so that the textile companies are unable to replicate them. Mr. Golak Bihari Nayak, Handloom and textiles Minister, said that the request will be presented to the Centre under the Geographical Identification Act after the signing of Gatt treaty and also will be registered at the Patent Office in Chennai. The unique ‘Kotpad’ design of tribals belonging to undivided Koraput district has already been registered while textile designs from Sambalpuri, Berhampuri, Bomkei, Nuapatna and Sonepuri will be patented soon. The Xaviers Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar, has been developing a project, for reforming Sambalpuri Vastraly, a state cooperative enterprise, supported by National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC), which would be then approved by the Centre.
