Silk yarn production in Tamil Nadu has increased following steep rise in the cocoon production from 65.71 tonnes in 2004-05 to 122.92 tonnes till November this year, an official of the sericulture department said. The Government had decided to encourage silk-yarn spinning units from this year and introduce several schemes for the Silk yarn units, and also those involved in sericulture as the Silk yarn production had become a profitable venture. He said the Department was willing to extend necessary assistance including finance for the Silk yarn production units as well as sericulturists who wanted to rear silk worm.
